This University accredited module is designed for Registered Nurses and Operating Department Practitioners working within the Operating Theatre and upon successful completion attracts 20 credits at degree Level 6. The aim of the module is to enhance critical thinking skills and clinical competencies required for the role of Surgical First Assistant (SFA) as determined by the Perioperative Care Collaborative (2018). This module addresses key principles of the Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) and other national and international guidelines.
The module is 48 weeks in duration. The taught content of the module is delivered over two contact days. This is followed by 15 hours of distance learning. Self-directed learning and work-based learning are key features of the module.
The aim of the course is to further develop knowledge, skills and experience in order for the registered practitioner to work safely, effectively and competently within the Operating Theatre in the role of the SFA. The registered practitioner will gain an understanding of their accountabilities, responsibilities and legal aspects of the role.
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- Explain the legal, professional and ethical issues of the SFA role
- Demonstrate competence in surgical and clinical skills that are specific to the SFA role
- Demonstrate effective communication techniques
- Describe wound healing, principles of wound/cavity drainage, surgical dressings
- Describe and demonstrate the management of haemorrhage and the maintenance of haemostasis
- Discuss how to prevent wound contamination
- Describe basic aetiological classifications of disease
- Demonstrate safe handling of tissue specimens

Entry Requirements:
Students are required to be a registered healthcare professional with at least two years’ experience in and able to demonstrate current competence in the scrub practitioner role.
The student must have identified appropriate Clinical Assessor(s) and Clinical Supervisor to assess the students level of clinical practice prior to attendance on the course.
Students must complete a minimum of 100 hours in practice in the role of the trainee SFA.
