The purpose of this course is to provide the Registered Practitioner with the underpinning knowledge to be able to perform the skill of peripheral intravenous cannulation safely and effectively using current and up to date guidance.
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- Outline the legal and professional aspects related to peripheral intravenous cannulation
- Detail the anatomy and physiology of the upper limb
- Demonstrate appropriate site selection before inserting a cannula
- Discuss the potential complications of peripheral intravenous cannulation
- List the appropriate infection control measures related to peripheral intravenous cannulation
- Describe how to prepare the cannula site
- Demonstrate appropriate cannula selection and give the rationale for each selection
- Discuss how to reduce and manage a needlestick injury
- Describe on-going care and maintenance of the cannula

Applicants should discuss access to this course with their manager and Practise Based Educator prior to booking.
This course is suitable for Registered Practitioners and selected Health Care Assistants
