This course is required learning for staff undertaking the role of Pre-Operative Assessment and is to be repeated every three years.
The aim of this 12 week University accredited course (gaining academic credits for your study is optional) is to empower the Clinical Practitioner to develop the relevant clinical knowledge and skills to be effective within the Pre-operative service including Preoperative Assessment History-Taking, Cardio-Vascular, Respiratory, Neck, and Airway assessment.
The course will also increase the underpinning knowledge required to perform the role of the Preoperative Assessment Practitioner effectively and safely. Learners will reflect on current levels of performance and previous experience to enable identification of learning needs and provide an opportunity to acquire new skills that support a higher level of practice. The course provides theoretical knowledge and understanding for the practitioner to achieve competency in Pre-Operative Assessment clinical skills as part of the course. These are achieved in the clinical setting under supervision and appropriate sign-off by an existing competent/ experienced / Senior Nursing , or Medical colleague. Competencies may be completed as soon as the course attendee is ready. Staff undertaking the accredited course are also required to submit their Competency Portfolio in week 10 of the course.
This is a University accredited course, successful completion will enable the individual student to gain the UCPD in Pre-Operative Assessment (20 academic credits) .
